The Cambrian

The Cambrian season got underway with the 1st week starting on 28th July and running for the next 5 weeks. Motive power as per normal was Standard 4 76079.

As per usual a great week was had even though the weather was questionable culminating in a major thunder storm on the Tuesday afternoon which made the trip back to Machynlleth an interesting experience with visability at Barmouth reduced to around 20 feet. Trips were made from Machynlleth to Porthmadog on Monday's, Tuesday's & Thursday's while steam returned to Pwllheli on Wednesday 30th July with further trains also on Friday's for the first time in 20 years.

Riley & Son Coach Demolition

Colin Green, Andie Shaw, Stuart Gray and Alisdair Morgan came down to Eastleigh to cut up the old Alstom training vehicle. I managed to get 2 days off work so I could lend a hand. It was an interesting couple of days even though the weather was appalling. Was also great to see Alasdairs truck in action too, what a piece of kit!

Uncle Mike - Photos from 1964 onwards....

On 13th June 2007, I was support crewing on a trip with 850 Lord Nelson down to Weymouth. At Weymouth my dad phoned with some terrible news that Uncle Mike, one of Dads closest friends had passed away that morning due to a long illness. Dad and Uncle Mike met when Uncle Mike came to Portsmouth to study at university here and a firm friendship of sum 40 years began.

Only a week or two previous we received news that Uncle Mike was getting better and treatment had been going well. Unfortunately Uncle Mike took a turn for the worst a few days before and gradually got worse and passed away that the morning of June 13th.

Sometime prior to all this, around July time 'ish' last year Uncle Mike had informed me of his vast collection of photographs from steam in the 60's and how some would look good on here. I duely agreed to this and over the last year prior to Uncle Mike's passing he duely loaded all of his original photo's onto his pc and started editing them and after all his efforts he created a few and sent them down to me only a few weeks before he died.

I have also included some modern day ones he took over the last couple of years also, it was also a great pleasure to meet up with Uncle Mike in Bury in the early part of the year for the Spring gala if memory serves me correct so he could see Lord Nelson in the flesh instead of viewing my pictures on here.

These pictures are all posted in memory for Uncle Mike so RIP Uncle Mike, happy steaming.

850 Move to Riley & Son (E) Ltd

Well the move to Riley Engineering was finally completed for fitting of OTMR etc without any major mishaps. Fun was had at Hereford for the waterstop which they werent expecting us to require water and then the hoses had to be run through a shopping centre car park, all adds to the fun even if you have to do a tour of Hereford to get to the closest fire hydrant!!!

A good trip in general and also great to catch up with the guys from up north.

Just one more thing to say, unfortunately the quality of the pics arent great and only a few came out reasonable. I know they arent the best quality but just trying to capture the occasion as best as possible. Most of the pics were used without the flash which unfortunately made the camara understeady for some reason, will look into this for furture reference so you have been warned!!!

The Extravaganza weekend went off rather well even though the weather for the weekend was variable to say the least, sunny on the Saturday and terrential rain on the Sunday.

Two passenger trips on Saturday for 850 and then the goods train on the Sunday morning. An interesting ride in the back brake van to say the least then back to passenger duties in the afternoon.

WSR Autumn Steam Gala

The Autumn Steam Gala contained no fewer than 12 steam locomotives from 3 of the 4 main steam companies of yester year.

Star attractions of the gala were 850 "Lord Nelson" making its first real major public appearence and 6024 "King Edward I"

Trains seemed to be busy the whole time and great fun was had by changing the head boards on 850 for each trip to give the 'photters' and different picture everytime.

Thanks must also go to Humphrey, Jesse, Ian & Colin for organising the cab ride on 88 which was great fun! Also to Paul & Jason for allowing me to have an interesting view around the signalbox at Minehead.

850 "Lord Nelson" WSR Move

Wednesday 16th August 2006 saw 850 "Lord Nelson" finally move to the West Somerset Railway in readiness for running in and the final few tweaks after its long restoration by the Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society.

This planned move was originally set for the previous week but due to gauging issues, Network Rail refused permission for 850 to move but this was rectified without further mishaps.

No major problems occured on the run down apart from a unit failing in front of us so we were held at Salisbury until 14:05pm. After arrival at Westbury 66138 ran round the formation and dragged 850 tender first to Bishops Lydeard, the reason being Lord Nelson would be facing chimney first for when she returns to Eastleigh on her loaded test run on October 21st.

The final 'southern' railtour by Ian Rileys dynamic duo saw a Salisbury to Salisbury circular tour via Yeovil, Yeovil Pen Mill, Weymouth, Southampton and Eastleigh.

The crowds were really drawn out to see the 2 locos which performed magically as always. The attack of Bincombe bank leaving Weymouth really was something special and Im sure the 'photters' really had some cracking film and photos.

Lord Nelson Update - 24th April 2006

Well after an absence of around 3 weeks I certainly noticed the difference in appearence of the engine. All the casing had been sprayed and the lining was started by Trevor.

As you can see "850" is really starting to take shape.

The Devonian

1st April 2006 saw 'The Devonian' run from Taunton to Plymouth and return with the 'dynamic duo' 45407 & 76079. Fortunatly the weather on Saturday was lovely with pleasent sunshine all day until dusk which was a different story to previous 2 days before the trip and on the Sunday where terrential rain showers made prepping the engines interesting to say the least.

Fortunately there were no 'mis-haps' either and a good trip was had by all and the sunshine over the Devon Coast and countryside made it worth all the effort and it was great too see plenty of people out and about looking at the engines.

850 "Lord Nelson" - Boiler Steam Test 29th October 2005

Saturday 29th October 2005 saw the last steam test of the recently returned boiler before further restoration continues. Earlier steam tests during the week saw 850's boiler brought up steadily to certain pressure points but today was the first time the safety valves were lifted at maximum pressure. The next time the boiler will be lit up will be when its resting in the frames.

Well a long drive up to Guisborough to pick Matt up then another 6 hour drive to Fort William for 5 days of fun on The Jacobite with 45407.

Trains ran everyday with a 10:20am departure from Fort William & a 14:10pm return from Mallaig.

It rained everyday apart from Thursday when the sun decided to shine but otherwise it was very wet & windy, I have never seen rain like it before!

An enjoyable week all round and worth the trip & 45407 performed fantastically!!!

The Dalesman - 28th August 2005

After watching the Rugby League final in Cardiff on Saturday 27th, I then drove up to York to meet up with a couple of friends and have a trip behind 45407 on the Settle & Carlisle line and what a great time I had despite the lack of sleep!

It was great to meet some of the other guys too and great to see a beautiful line as well. This was my first trip over the S&C and hopefully not my last either. Most of the pics were taken on the way up to Carlisle.

On Monday we left york just after 6am to return 45407 back to the North Yorkshire Moors where it is running the Whitby shuttles before venturing up to Scotland on Friday.

Thanks again to those people involved #;o)

The Downsman - 4th August 2005

Well this time the train did run and what a pleasent journey it was too. The day started out with a 375 journey from Fartton at 9:36am to Victoria via Arundel and Redhill arriving at London Victoria at 11:44am.

We soon met up with Matt Carey, Matts mum 'Mrs C' and Mat Yardley who came up from Plymouth and Loughbrough respectively.

After a small wait the train arrived into Platform 2 and we found our seats, coach G which was 4th coach from the front which we were very happy about (Thanks Ian!).

Well we were soon on our way and a good run was experienced and especially a good climb up form Shalford after we had taken water. A good run all round and good to see we are trying to continue with everyday life as much as possible too after the incidents of last month, which caused the postponement of the original trip on July 7th. I'm sure those who re-arranged for todays trip enjoyed it as much as we did.

Just a note to anyone who is thinking about having a mainline trip or who hasn't experienced one yet, the Downsman ticket is great value for £30, 80 miles of variable running and also a route that requires the loco to work hard so well worth the effort if you are considering a mainline trip.
